Compute a Clipped GRPO Surrogate
Language ModelsReinforcement LearningLoss Functions
Hard

Compute the clipped GRPO surrogate for selected response tokens. For sequence i and token t, let ℓitnew\ell^{\mathrm{new}}_{it}ℓitnew and ℓitold\ell^{\mathrm{old}}_{it}ℓitold be the supplied log probabilities, AiA_iAi the sequence advantage, and ϵ\epsilonϵ the clip width. The bounded probability ratio is

rit=exp⁡(clip⁡(ℓitnew−ℓitold,−60,60)).r_{it}=\exp\left(\operatorname{clip}(\ell^{\mathrm{new}}_{it}-\ell^{\mathrm{old}}_{it},-60,60)\right).rit=exp(clip(ℓitnew−ℓitold,−60,60)).

The token surrogate is

sit=min⁡(ritAi,clip⁡(rit,1−ϵ,1+ϵ)Ai).s_{it}=\min\left(r_{it}A_i,\operatorname{clip}(r_{it},1-\epsilon,1+\epsilon)A_i\right).sit=min(ritAi,clip(rit,1−ϵ,1+ϵ)Ai).

Here, exp is the exponential function and clip limits a value to the stated inclusive interval. The loss is the negative mean surrogate across all tokens selected by the mask. Report each sequence's selected-token mean and the fraction of selected ratios strictly outside the clip interval. A sequence without selected tokens has mean zero; when no tokens are selected, both scalar results are zero.

Return a Python dictionary of PyTorch tensors: loss and clipped_fraction are scalars, and per_sequence_surrogate has shape (batch,). All outputs preserve the log-probability dtype and device.

Hint 1

torch.clamp bounds a tensor elementwise.

Hint 2

A singleton token axis broadcasts one advantage across its sequence.

Hint 3

torch.minimum compares the two signed surrogate tensors elementwise.

Requirements

  • Use PyTorch and preserve the supplied floating dtype and device.
  • Masked positions must not contribute to the loss or clipping diagnostics.
  • Do not modify input tensors.

Constraints

  • New and old log probabilities are aligned finite rank-two PyTorch tensors of shape (batch, tokens).
  • advantages is a floating tensor of shape (batch,); token_mask is a Boolean tensor matching the token shape.
  • Floating tensors share dtype and device; editor inputs use float32, and the mask uses the same device.
  • clip_epsilon lies in [0, 1); inputs may be noncontiguous.
